Stress, Sleep & Nervous-System Regulation
Stress affects much more than how you feel emotionally. When your nervous system remains activated for too long, it can affect sleep, muscle tension, digestion, pain, energy, and your ability to recover.
Acupuncture can provide an opportunity for the body to shift out of a state of constant activation and into a more relaxed state.

Common concerns I work with
- Stress and overwhelm
- Difficulty relaxing
- Trouble falling asleep
- Waking frequently during the night
- Poor sleep quality
- Muscle tension related to stress
- Restlessness
- Stress-related physical symptoms
- Difficulty recovering after prolonged stress
- Feeling tired but unable to fully relax
Helping the body let go
One of the things people often notice during acupuncture is that their body begins to relax in a way that can be difficult to achieve on their own.
You may come in feeling tense, restless, or mentally busy and find that your body gradually settles during treatment.
This is one of the reasons I find acupuncture particularly useful for people who have been under prolonged stress. Sometimes the body needs an opportunity to experience what it feels like to stop being “on” all the time.
Acupuncture and sleep
Sleep problems can have many causes. Stress, physical discomfort, hormonal changes, lifestyle, and other health factors can all play a role.
Acupuncture may help support relaxation and the body’s ability to regulate itself, which can be useful when tension or stress is interfering with sleep.
Rather than simply focusing on getting you to sleep, treatment looks at the larger pattern contributing to your difficulty relaxing or recovering.
The nervous system and physical symptoms
The nervous system is involved in how we experience pain, stress, digestion, sleep, and many other aspects of health.
When your body has been responding to stress for a long time, it can become difficult to shift gears. You may know intellectually that you are safe and that you should be able to relax, while your body continues to feel tense or alert.
Acupuncture can be one way of giving the body a different experience.
What to expect
Your treatment will depend on what you are experiencing. We may focus on relaxation and regulation, physical tension, sleep, or other symptoms that are part of the same overall pattern.
You don’t need to arrive at your appointment knowing exactly what is wrong. Part of my job is to look at the bigger picture and determine how acupuncture may be useful.
