Pregnancy & Postpartum Acupuncture

Pregnancy and the postpartum period bring significant physical and emotional changes. Acupuncture can be used as supportive care during these transitions, alongside your regular medical or obstetric care.

Treatment is adapted to your stage of pregnancy or postpartum recovery and your individual circumstances.

During pregnancy

Pregnancy can bring physical changes that affect your comfort, sleep, digestion, energy, and ability to move through your usual daily activities.

Acupuncture may be used for supportive care with concerns such as:

  • Back and pelvic discomfort
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Digestive discomfort
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Stress and difficulty relaxing
  • General pregnancy-related discomfort

Your treatment is adjusted throughout pregnancy rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

Preparing for birth

As your due date approaches, you may want additional support for your physical and emotional well-being as you prepare for birth.

Acupuncture can be incorporated into your care during the later stages of pregnancy. If you are also participating in childbirth education, working with a doula, or using other birth-preparation approaches, acupuncture can be one part of that larger support system.

Postpartum support

The postpartum period is a major transition. Your body is recovering from pregnancy and birth while you are also adapting to the demands of caring for a new baby.

Acupuncture may provide supportive care for concerns such as:

  • Physical recovery and discomfort
  • Muscle tension
  • Sleep disruption
  • Stress and overwhelm
  • Digestive changes
  • Energy and recovery
  • General postpartum well-being

Postpartum care should be individualized to your experience, including the type of birth you had and any medical considerations that may affect your recovery.

Working alongside your medical care

Acupuncture is complementary care. It does not replace prenatal care, obstetric care, postpartum medical care, or evaluation of symptoms that require medical attention.

If you are pregnant or recently postpartum, I take your medical history and current care into account when determining whether and how acupuncture may be appropriate.
